Tutti noi siamo costantemente impegnati a migliorare il nostro stile di vita: curiamo la nostra alimentazione e scegliamo cibi sani e naturali, assumiamo la giusta quantità di frutta, verdura e di fibre, facciamo esercizio fisico e pratichiamo regolarmente sport, cerchiamo di dormire le giuste ore di sonno. Le ultime ricerche scientifiche hanno però dimostrato che anche la lettura è utilissima a mantenere sani la nostra mente e il nostro corpo: infatti, leggere promuove reazioni neurologiche e porta benefici a livello cerebrale. Mentre leggiamo aumenta il flusso di sangue che arriva al cervello e in questo modo aumenta la coordinazione di funzioni cognitive complesse e molteplici, in pratica, una ginnastica per il cervello.

La profonda fase di rilassamento in cui il corpo e la mente entrano durante la lettura, ha potenti e benefici effetti: il battito cardiaco rallenta e si abbassa il livello di cortisolo, l’ormone causa dello stress, e il livello di tensione si abbassa fino all’80%. E’ inoltre provato che leggere aiuta a prevenire malattie degenerative come l’alzhaimer grazie all’attività mentale legata alla lettura.

Dopo ogni esperienza di lettura migliora la connettività nella corteccia temporale sinistra del cervello (responsabile della comprensione analitica) e tale effetto dura per diversi giorni.


Quante cose possiamo dire ancora della lettura! Leggere allena la memoria, rafforza la capacità cognitiva, arricchisce il linguaggio e il nostro bagaglio culturale, rende la mente più dinamica e fa volare la fantasia. Con un buon libro preveniamo l’aggressività, riattiviamo la creatività e rafforziamo la capacità di pensiero autonomo. Leggere inoltre aumenta la capacità empatica e ci aiuta a comprendere meglio le persone con cui ci rapportiamo e noi stessi, ci rende consapevoli dei nostri stati d’animo e delle nostre emozioni. Leggere implica trovare tempo da dedicare a se stessi e a dargli un profondo valore.

Mentre leggiamo evadiamo dalla realtà circostante e perdiamo l’ossessiva attenzione alle nostre sensazioni corporee: non essendo più concentrati sulle tensioni muscolari permettiamo che il corpo si rilassi e si abbandoni.

La poesia stimola il cervello in modo molto simile e, come anche per la musica, stimola l’emisfero destro del cervello che regola le emozioni e consente l’introspezione.

I libri, per concludere, sono uno strumento di prevenzione che favorisce il benessere personale e la cosa più importante è che il piacere di leggere crea dipendenza!
